What Does it Mean to Stand in the Gap?

In Ezekiel 22:30-31 God talks about a time of great separation from Him. He had been very patient. He told them exactly what He was looking for in the law. After all that He had done with miracles, with punishment, the prophets, etc. the people were still far from Him. There was a gap between God and man.

As God saw the land, he looked for someone that would keep him from destroying it. This is reminiscent of when God came to Abraham in Genesis 18:20 looking to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah and Abraham pleaded for the land for Lot’s sake. Abraham kept pleading for God to not destroy the land if different numbers of good men were found in the land. The numbers kept getting fewer and fewer, but eventually only Lot and his daughters escaped.

In this case, God is not finding anyone there to stand in the gap– to be the righteous person in the midst of an unclean people or culture. For we at this site, we choose to stand in the gap by pointing out God’s values and God’s ideals in various ways: commenting on what’s going on in our society, sharing God’s values, and drawing attention to where we as a society are going and where God is going.
