One can only envision that as time passed from the Ascension, the Apostles started to realize how important it was to document their witness and describe in detail how to live the Christian faith. Only so much could be entrusted to people through teaching, and so we see the New Testament start to take shape.

Structure of relationships under Christ take shape in all of the these works– churches, marriages, slaves, government– as the Apostles fleshed out how believers were to both be citizens of another world, but inhabitants of this one. How do you be “in the world, but not of the world?”

So Peter is going to take us through our responsibilities as believers in this world.

A lot is said about the Bible and slavery.  Every time I get into a discussion or read someone trying to make an argument about the Bible being archaic in terms of social progress, one of the comments that shows up is that the Bible condoned or put forth a system that included slavery.

What they fail to do is actually examine the concept of slavery as imposed by the Bible, and the directives of slavery.

Banning Abortion would not stop abortions from happening, we’re told, because they’ll happen regardless.  Wouldn’t we prefer that abortions happen in doctor’s offices instead of back alleys?  Wouldn’t we want to keep people that want abortions safe?

What if we applied this logic to other societal ills—like slavery?

Although slavery officially ended in America after the Civil War, it’s still existing in the USA.  True, there is sex slavery, human trafficking, and other things that are alive and well, but when you go to the Bible and the historical accounts you get a different picture of slavery and you’ll see what I mean.

First, slavery in the Bible did not bear the negative connotations it does today.
