She’s only 18-years-old but Reanne Racktoo has a haul of gold, silver and bronze medals from international climbing competitions.

Her achievement is even more remarkable given she is registered blind and has cerebral palsy.

Her mother Amanda, 46, from Bury, Greater Manchester, brims with pride over her daughter’s achievements – and also feels a sense of vindication, for when Reanne was born, she was advised to turn off her baby’s life support machine because her child would have ‘no quality of life’.

Mother Gives Birth in the Woods Alone

Here’s an amazing story from California:

According to Pangborn’s mother, her daughter was nine months pregnant and decided to visit an Oroville casino Wednesday to walk around in an attempt to induce labor. Williams said her daughter was traveling to another area casino when she ended up on a remote road in the national forest and ran out of gas. There was no mobile phone reception, Williams said. Oroville is about 80 miles north of Sacramento.

Williams said her daughter told her she went into labor early Thursday morning, unrolled a sleeping bag and gave birth in her car’s backseat. Williams said Pangborn spent the next two days swatting away bees and insects, fearful of a bear attack. Mother and daughter survived on water and apples, Williams said.

On Saturday, Williams said Pangborn used a lighter, a can of hairspray and a can of oil to start a signal fire with the sleeping bag.

"She is smart and tough," Williams said. "I’m relieved it turned out all right."

French of the Forest Service said the fire burned about a quarter of an acre before it was extinguished. – Lost California mother rescued after giving birth in forest, family says

Not Every Mom a Stay At Home Mom

June 10th, 2015 Viewed 1670 times

Mother and KidsMy mother stayed at home while her kids were young to watch us.  What she did when we were all at school was a mystery that I didn’t think about– she would always be there to pick us up at school to bring us home.  I think that many families pattern their behavior after what their parents did– or try to do better than their parents– so it shouldn’t surprise you that my wife all stays home with our kids((Interestingly, none of my siblings currently have this arrangement)).

Changes in the neighborhood

One of the problems with this change in home arrangement is that neighborhoods are a lot different depending on who lives there.  A few generations ago, when most moms were home, you could have safer neighborhoods with adult presence at most homes and kids playing at different homes under adult supervision.  My friend across the street and I played almost daily all during my childhood!
