Does the Bible Support Women Political Leaders?

November 20th, 2018 Viewed 104 times, 5 so far today

Every election season this questions returns to the forefront with people asking the question in different ways. In 2007, I covered the whole “Can a Woman be President of the United States?” and looking at that post I had quite the discussion in the comments for an introductory post.

The answer was less provocative than the title suggested. The Constitution and Amendments to the Constitution definitely permit the Presidency to be held by a man or a woman that gets the majority of the Electoral College.

Where Does Paul Derive His Instruction about the Men/Women in the Church?

First, Paul appeals to the fact that God is not the author of confusion. Next, he takes on the idea that the man is the spiritual leader in the home (Deut 6). Adam and Eve get another mention in 1 Tim 2.

What are the commands in these passages?

  • All done in church is for edification and needs to be done in order.
  • Those that are not speaking should weigh what has been said.
  • Women are to keep silent and submissive in church.
  • A woman is to ask of her husband if there is something she wishes to learn.
  • Women should be adorned modestly, showing her good works.
  • Women are not to exercise authority over a man.

Is the Pastor/Teacher/Leader Always Right?

This passage would imply that the answer is no—even if it’s someone that’s prophesying, there were to be those that judged what was said to determine whether it was so. Paul indicated that we should be aware of false teachers and false teaching, as well as the Bereans were commended for searching out the Scriptures after hearing teaching. We are not to be passive learners. This underscores the power of the home as spiritual center (Deut 6) as the woman was to seek her “head” to learn, and not just learn from that which was taught because she could be more easily deceived.

What Is a Church?

If these are rules for a gathering of the church, what is a meeting of the church? Does that include Bible Studies? Sunday School? Just Worship Services? Are we violating these teachings by how we allow for questions from anyone from any sex? In the early days, they met in homes and had more like home Bible Studies, so the idea that it’s just for in the church does not seem to fit. And yet, what would this look like?

Is the Command Cultural?

Perhaps this command was only for them, as the women might have been less educated in spiritual things, and maybe men were less tolerant and considered it high disrespect for his wife to be holding forth on the word over him. And yet what man wants another man telling his wife what is right or wrong in the Lord if that’s his duty? Perhaps the problem that we have is that men have become passive in their responsibility both to their wives and to the Scripture. They have allowed the Pastor to take the position of Spiritual authority for his home, which the Bible never gives him. While the Pastor is to care for the flock, he is never given that place of Spiritual Authority of someone else’s home any more than any other believer pointing out sin.

This World is Not Our Home

Husbands and wives, when you were dating you wanted to find out everything you could about your significant other. You would give them presents wrapped in their favorite color, jewelry in their favorite color metal, and maybe bring them their favorite treat. There was no bounds, and you prioritized that person over everything—work, school, family (just ask them!).

While Jesus does not want to be your boyfriend or girlfriend, He demands that kind of passion—that He is the center of your life and that you will seek Him and His glory first and foremost. That you will repent of your sin, turn and follow Him wherever that leads.

May I encourage you—spend time in God’s Word, and as you do, look at it like that love that you had (and hopefully still have!) for your spouse. Look for ways that you can please Him, and don’t let the culture, what others may think, etc. get between you and giving praise and glory to your Savior.

Don’t get trapped in the lies of the world, that this is the best that it’s been. This world is not our home, and the best is yet to come.

Kids listening to music

Like many questions, this one is challenging because there is a desire to do a certain activity, and because there’s a desire that means that we’re motivated to find means to justify our actions.  We’re not coming to the item unbiased, but biased toward a position.

I believe that music is one such place where God’s people need to be a bit more careful to come at the subject without their bias if they are going to truly find God’s will on the issue.

MotherKidsGovernment is a really great entity for coming up with ideas.  Government believes that they are the answer to every problem, and most of the time (or so it seems) they think more about today’s problem then what will happen tomorrow, or the unintended consequences of their solution.

I mean, who else plans to spend their great grandchildren’s money today?

Purity Starts in the Home

pure kiss

Each of us learns many things from our home environment.  Our first sounds and words, how to walk, how to relate to one another, and how to act—all of these are modeled for us day in and day out by our parents.

This is why it is so important for us as parents to live a pure life in front of our children and to model the best in front of them, and teach them how they should act.

I was robbed!

Talk about a wake up call. Between 8pm Monday night and 4 pm yesterday someone went into my car and stole the Blaupunkt CD/Radio indash receiver and a case of at least 25 CDs. I think they also took the change in the cup.

It just goes to remind you that we live in a fallen world, and to lock your car doors!
