Work 1

The Internet is a highly visual place.  That being the case, it’s a good thing for every blog to get a virtual new can of paint at least once a year.

This can mean changing up or decluttering the sidebar, it could mean doing more features or series, or it could mean either finding a good new free template or buying a template from a good designer.

Laptop 3

The other day I was noticing that my blog was running ridiculously slow when I was in the admin panel.  This was with having Google Gears turned on.

There are three things that go toward the speed of your blog—or any computer for that matter.  The number of processors, the amount of memory, and the amount of time across the network.

Since I only deal with broadband Internet, I didn’t think it was that.  Memory seemed ok—and the main site was functional.  That, and other sites I’m running seemed to be downright perky.  So, what was the deal?

WordPress 2.6 introduced an exciting new feature, especially for those who blog over Dial-Up Modem.  They have added support for Google Gears to the platform, so that once you enable it, many of the admin panel pages will react much quicker than they did in previous versions of WordPress.

New York State’s New Tax Law

10dollarbill

New York State’s recent action to make sure that they get their tax dollars has had a chilling effect across all affiliates from that region.

In case you haven’t heard, NYS has, for some time, been suspicious of people buying and selling stuff online.  The rule was that those companies that had physical offices in NYS had to charge tax, but those with outside offices did not.  Obviously they thought they weren’t getting their fair share.

WordPress Logo Every single time I set up a WordPress blog (and I’ve set up quite a few now) there are a few plugins that I find myself wanting or needing every single time.  It’s to the point that if I’m helping someone out on their blog and I go look at their plugins, I immediately wonder why they are not there!

These plugins vary from those that work behind the scenes to those that do their work out in the open:

Threaded Comments

Help One of the things that makes commenting difficult on blogs (for me at least) is trying to keep a line of discussion going.  Since there is no hierarchy to comments, you’re not always able to keep track of what’s being said to whom.  This is one of the things that forums do a much better job of managing.

Affiliate Ad Manager Update

May 9th, 2008 Viewed 1174 times

almost finished 2 Well, there’s been a few tweaks, but so far the Ad Manager seems to be running smoothly.  As is always the case, bad data in means bad data out.  I had a few cases of some ads not showing images because Performics had urls with two “.”s before the com– “xxx..com/xxx”.  After I fixed these things were going along quite well.

Would it Make a Difference?

Lined Notebook So I got to wondering the other day while I was mowing the lawn…

What is the effect of a high ranking blogger on a blog?  More specifically, if a more popular blogger were to comment on a rather unknown blog, what effect would they have on that blog?

Could I get someone like Darren Rowse of problogger.net to write a guest post on my blog by means of research– somehow measure the effect of this high ranking blogger posting on a blog that was relatively unknown?

It’s That Time Again

Links Time for lots of links.

I’m running a bit behind, trying to keep up all these blogs as well as write interesting posts, and keep up with the comments.

So, this week I’m going to do some rapid fire links posts, each one a given topic from my delicious account.

Hope you enjoy!

New Affiliate Ads

Affiliates Billboard

I’m toying with something new here at MInTheGap.  Some of you may already have noticed what it is, but I thought I’d explain myself.

Up on the top right you will now see a random set of 4 ads.  This is different from the Square ad that occupies that space if you’re a first time visitor or viewing and old post.  These ads are affiliate ads which means I signed up and was approved for their programs and that if you buy something from them, or sign up with them, I get a percentage of the fee.
