Roughing It
Ah, the joys of camping. The food, the marshmallows, the mosquitos. There’s just nothing quite like it. This past Labor Day my family went camping, but instead of worrying about tents with kids we decided that we’d rent a cabin.
What I wasn’t quite prepared for when I got there was the number of 5th Wheels and RVs that would be there.

Self Inking Stamps and Other Projects
My mom paints. Her mom rubber stamps. Both of them have an artistic talent that I wish had come down to me! What’s neat is, since we’re homeschooling my mom gets an outlet for her artistic gift with my kids. Hopefully more of it rubs off on them than rubbed off on me.

Being Out of Debt Brings Peace in the Storm
I’m sorry, but I’m having a lot of trouble wondering why it’s a big deal that banks will be able to give out less credit. To me, this whole sub-prime mortgage crisis is something that we’ve brought on ourselves.
I’m actually one of the ones that has benefited from these risky loans. I did not have a standard down-payment of 20% when it came time to buy my house, so I got an FHA loan based on my income potential and that I could raise $4000 in closing costs.

Are You Giving Money to Charity?
There is a reason why the Bible says that “the love of money is the root of all of evil.” It is one of the things that you can get, and yet never have enough of. It is one of the things that men kill for, and will make good men bad.
Last night, Sen. McCain said that earmarks and pork barrel spending—spending someone else’s money—is a gateway drug. It is something that will make people who were once good do things that they said that they were against.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.

Saving Time For Those Who Don’t Like to Iron
I don’t know about you, but ironing can be a pain. Now, it’s true that I really haven’t had to iron my clothes every day since I was in college. Back then, you didn’t have the opportunity to grab something right out of the dryer and hang it up.
I was good, though. I never starched my clothes. I had a roommate my freshman year that told the story of starching his clothes so much that it caused the shirt to stand on its own.
Starch was like a secret ingredient.

How’s Your Financial Health?
So, this morning I was presented with a chance to go through some questions about my fiscal health. Getting out of debt was an extremely freeing experience that I recommend for everyone. Contrary to the image at the right, I received a 92% A from billsIQ for my financial health—but they reminded me of a few problem areas I still have.

Make Sure You Have Insurance
One of the most tragic things about the fire that consumed my church friend’s house was the fact that they did not have rental insurance. What we found out only later was that a family member had encouraged them to get the insurance before they took a trip overseas shortly before the accident!
House insurance was mandatory with the mortgage we got with our current house. We went with a family friend and, when you think about how much it insures, the little that you pay per year is amazing for what it can do in the case of a fire or other catastrophic event.
But just because it seems cheap when compared to other kinds of insurance (read car, life, etc.), that doesn’t mean that there aren’t deals to be had.

What To Do When You Get a Lemon
Make Lemonade?
It’s interesting that when you go to purchase the car, very few of us actually think of the price of the car as the price that it will be to make repairs on the car throughout its lifetime.
Most of the time, I know, I just look at the sticker price, shake my head, and wonder how long it will take me to save enough to buy one outright. “Forever” is the usual response!
