So says the Majority Leader of the Senate, Harry Reid (D-NV).  As part of his defense against the cuts that the House Republicans have made, Sen. Harry Reid defends the National Endowment of the Arts and The National Endowment of the Humanities with the following statement:

“The mean-spirited bill, H.R. 1 … eliminates the National Endowment of the Humanities, National Endowment of the Arts,” said Reid. “These programs create jobs. The National Endowment of the Humanities is the reason we have in northern Nevada every January a cowboy poetry festival. Had that program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.” [Senator Harry Reid Rails Against Republicans Cutting Funds For a Cowboy Poetry Festival – Say Anything]

Though it’s one thing to say that we can’t cut funding to reading cowboy poetry, which is an interesting argument in and of itself, the part at the end was the part that caught my attention.  ‘Had the program not been around, the tens of thousands of people who come there every year would not exist.”

Certainly he means that they’d lost out on the tourism, right?
