Saving Money

Moving Can Be a Pain

Missing Mom

I never thought that I would move as much as I have—and with so little time in between.  Within a period of a year and a half I moved an hour away, and then back again so that I’m in the same city I was in 2008 when I lost my job, and I’m back at that job.  Life’s come full circle, and I’ll only be able to run for President in the next Presidential election (not that I’d get more than 100 votes anyway!)

In any case, each time we’ve moved we’ve been fortunate enough to get family and friends to help us pack the moving vans1.  That doesn’t mean that we didn’t look for moving quotes.  I mean, who can beat someone else taking our stuff and putting it in the truck—it took us hours and lots of tired muscles to do it our way.

Fortunately, it’s not like I had to look up Fresno moving services or find some San Francisco movers, but I wasn’t able to find any deals back then to move.  Looking back, I wish I had.

Moving is always a chore.  There’s getting your things to the appropriate location, but there’s always damage done and the question of storage in the new place.  My couch has seen the worst of it—it was ripped on its trip from our original home and then ripped in a different place when it arrived at the house that we’re renting.

One thing I’ve learned is not to skimp on the packing blankets and make sure that you have everything secure.  Oh, and it doesn’t hurt if you use craigslist to get rid of things that are nice but you don’t really need.  That’s what happened to our second couch for our “family room” in my old house.

Anyway, I’m not looking forward to moving again next summer, but I’m sure I’ll learn something there as well—like maybe saving up so I can hire movers!

  1. Can you believe that we filled two 34’ UHAULs on our trip back? []

Yes, moving can be one of the most stressful experiences. It demands a lot of hard work… It is something that you have to start working at least one month in advance and then the full unpacking and organizing of everything can take another month or so… It is definitely a lot of work! :(

I know moving is very stressful, but we’ve been trying to sell our house for almost 6 months so we can move into our dream home. So I’m actually looking forward to the stress of moving if we can ever sell our home in this terrible market!!!

Ugh… moving is a real bear. In the 6 years my husband and I have been together, we’ve moved 3 times. Now rent is poised to go up substantially in April, so we may have to move again. It’ll be tough, we’ll probably have to find a smaller place, which means getting rid of a lot of the furniture we have. I don’t look forward to it.
