My grandparents are not getting any younger. It’s a fact that I’ve kinda ignored for most of my life. At my wedding, I had all four grandparents—all with their original spouses—in attendance. It wouldn’t be until two or three years later that I would lose the first (my grandfather), but I still have three of them living today.
And I take them for granted.
It’s not intentional. It’s hard with one of them so far away, and the other in failing health with me and my kids and busy schedule. There are no excuses.
The thing is, this has all come to a head because my maternal grandmother may not have much more time on this Earth. She’s already said that if things get bad she’s ready to go into the hands of the Lord rather than to be resuscitated.
Fortunately, they have all been mobile up until this point. I mean, it’s a great thing to have one of those Medicare scooters, and near the end of my paternal grandfather’s life he had one and loved the mobility it gave him—but there’s something about being able to continue to walk on your own two feet.
So, make sure to contact your loved ones. Cherish the time you have with them, your bridge to the previous generation. Help them to make memories with your children for as long as you can.
It’s those memories that will outlast them, and that may inspire them to be all they can be.
Wouldn’t it be nice if they were around forever.
