Joe the Plumber—or is he?

Plumber Joe Wurzelbacher watches the presidential candidate debate in his home in Ohio on Oct. 15, 2008. (Lori King/Toledo Blade)“Joe the Plumber” sounds like one of those names from the medieval time, like “Charles the Great” or “Edward the Fat”.  In any case, what if “Joe the Plumber” really isn’t a plumber after all—or at least a licensed plumber?

Does that change his argument?

Joe the Plumber is not exactly a plumber, he’s “not even close” to making the kind of money that would result in higher taxes from Democrat Barack Obama’s proposals and has such an aversion to taxes that a lien was filed against him by the state of Ohio. – Washington Post

I mean, “Joe the Plumber” was a face to put to a hypothetical scenario in the first place, and does not change the fact that Sen. Obama suggested that he wanted to “spread the wealth around.”

Pilgrim at Say Anything goes one step further:

In the past couple of days they’ve gone after Joe with a vengeance. They’ve done everything from publish his address and his divorce papers to letting everyone know that he has a tax lien pending, and that he’s not even a licensed plumber. The horror. They want him crushed. Ruined. Shut up, Joe.

Is this it? Is this how it’s going to be?

If you dare to speak out against the coming tide of liberalism will you be humiliated, exposed for the huge mistake of being…..human? There had better not be so much of a speck of dirt in your past if you want to publicly disagree with the Obama Nation. They will make sure to let everyone know about the domestic disturbance you once had, or that misdemeanor arrest in your youth, or the time you got kicked out of school for skipping and hiding out at the house where those two sisters lived (oh, wait…that was me) or anything else to discredit and humiliate you.

Has it truly become more about the person than the policy?  Can someone ask a question or have a statement, and have that idea be the thing that is discussed, rather than the messenger?

It reminds me of John the Baptist announcing the coming Messiah.  I’m sure the religious leaders were all about talking about how he was dressed and what he ate as ways to try to keep people from hearing the truth.

Let’s weigh the message—let’s weigh the idea—and then make our decisions.

  1. I don’t think Joe was saying he made $250,000. I think he said he was thinking of buying a business that cost as much…which would suffer under Obama’s taxation plan.

Whatever the deal is on his background, Joe helped Obama make his point beautifully. (Socialism.) Joe was also very succinct on some very important issues – I think he should campaign with McCain/Palin.

I think that his words were such a threat to the Democrat’s ticket and their real agenda that they had to seek to destroy him, aided by the media.

That’s a real shame – but isn’t that the way socialism works? Individual thought has to be squelched.
