It’s amazing what you can see on television nowadays. Shows like The Swan and Extreme Makeover try to convince you that major surgery can make you look better, younger, healthier, etc. Though they are not as popular as they were at one point, they exposed the ever increasing trend of people wanting to use surgery to either try to stop the effects of aging, or to make some feature of their face look like they wanted it to look.
My Nose
What feature would you want changed if you could change anything?
I’ve always thought that my nose was big. Not big enough to warrant 2 hours under general anasthesia, but if I had to pick a feature on my face, I would say that my nose is probably pretty distinct.
Would you actually have plastic surgery done to fix it? Not me!
It took me a while to follow my wife’s suggestion about changing my hairstyle and growing facial hair.
Time Will Catch Up With You
There are certainly great places where plastic surgery is used– like with burn victims and doing reconstruction. There are also abuses, and people that think they can cheat time.
The only problem with that idea is that it’s futile– time will always catch up to you, and the surgery that you have done to try to stop it will often turn you into a cartoonish looking person, and make you have to keep coming back for more.
We all have parts of ourselves that we wish we could change. Especially women, since we are constantly bombarded with images of how we are “supposed” to look.
I think there is a time and place for plastic surgery, but I do think it is overused much. I can understand getting plastic surgery in the situations, like you said, of being a burn victim and reconstruction (an example of this would be breast reconstruction following a masectomy).
I think the problem lies with us trying to place our self-worth in our appearance. Things like “well, if I only had a larger chest/smaller nose/bigger calves I’d be happier”. Our inner joy should not come from how we look, but it should come from Christ.

Posted by militarywifey | September 17, 2008, 12:57 amThat’s so funny…I always thought my nose was too long and pointy. In high school I was certain it was my worst feature. Now I love it. Crazy. I’m a lot happier with my looks these days, but I think it’s less to do with my actual looks and more to do with my maturity! And it helps to have an adoring dh…never underestimate the value of a husband’s unconditional love!

Posted by Mary | September 17, 2008, 1:26 amI’m actually pretty OK with my face – it’s the rest of my body I wouldn’t mind changing! A few nips here, a tuck or two there.
But it’s just like you said, we all age anyway and there’s no way to “beat the clock.” Gravity will catch up to us all one day. May as well just enjoy what you have while you have it!

Posted by Rachel | September 17, 2008, 4:45 pmI must admit that I would probably do more work on the rest of my body than my face. However, I would love to get my teeth done.
