Is It Time To Mark the Calendars?

The general rule of thumb is that you can mark your calendars—9 months after a calamity hits there’ll be a baby boom.

So, I’m starting to wonder… is it too soon to start marking the calendars?  Since this financial crisis is being made out to be something of epic proportions it might just be the case.

Or will it be the case that fewer people have children since they’ll be worried about the mouths they’ll have to feed?

Bailout and the Bible

While I was thinking about the Bailout that Almost Was last night and the Bible, the Lord brought a parable to mind, and I saw it in a different light.

This parable, found in the Gospel of Luke, was used by Christ to talk about the fact that we should focus on “laying up” treasures in heaven, rather than treasures on Earth.  Last  night, however, I thought about it terms of credit and debt.

Wishing They Never Woke the GOP Up

dollar 4I’m sure that in a few days when the Democrats realize just what happened today they will wish they stayed in town back in September and talked about drilling rather than going home.

Why do I say that?  Because the seeds of what happened today were planted around Labor Day.  Until Labor Day, the Republicans were in disarray.  The Democrats had the momentum around Sen. Obama.  They had the lead in both houses of Congress.  They thought this was all sewn up.

The problem is, in an election year nothing is certain—which is what we saw today.

Of Gov. Sarah Palin and Dinosaurs

Gov Sarah Palin

This is supposed to shock you.  Get ready.  Brace yourselves.

Gov. Sarah Palin believes that humans and dinosaurs coexisted on an earth that’s only about 6,000 years old.

Shocking, I know, since thousands of people have visited the Creation Museum.  Check out this page on Wikipedia talking about polls on the topic of Creation and Evolution.

A Little Premature?

Picture_3Tonight’s the first debate—and yet a reader of the Wall Street Journal online found this:

Although the fate of tonight’s presidential debate in Mississippi remains very much up in the air, John McCain has apparently already won it—if you believe an Internet ad an astute reader spotted next to this piece in the online edition of the Wall Street Journal this morning. – Hat Tip: Say Anything

Keep It Up, Guys

Meet John Boehner.  This is the man (well, he and the other Conservative House Republicans) that stand between us and the bailout.

Well, actually, there’s also a lot of politics involved—surprise, surprise.

You see, the President, the Treasury Secretary, the Senate Democrats, the Senate Republicans and the House Democrats all want this bill.  And they have the power to pass it right now.  Today.  Right this minute.

Magic Tricks?

art.david.blaine.apSo, after President Bush spoke, we were flipping through the channels, looking to see if anyone was doing news coverage and talking about what it all meant, when we ended up on ABC and they had the latest stunt from David Blaine supposedly showing “Live”.  In this stunt, Blaine was suspended from scaffolding forty-four feet (44 ft.) in the air by a set of Spiderman type ropes—upside down, where he’d been like that for 60 hours.

McCain Afraid to Debate?

mccain2 Unlikely.  At least, that’s the word from former Pres. Bill Clinton:

“We know he didn’t do it because he’s afraid because Sen. McCain wanted more debates,” Clinton said, adding that he was “encouraged” by the joint statement from McCain and Sen. Barack Obama.

“You can put it off a few days the problem is it’s hard to reschedule those things,” Clinton said, “I presume he did that in good faith since I know he wanted — I remember he asked for more debates to go all around the country and so I don’t think we ought to overly parse that.”

Why Not Let Her Speak?

If you’re a Democrat, the answer is: She’s not ready.  In fact, this is part of the Democrat’s worst nightmare: that this hick governor from a state that’s not even connected to the lower 48 would become President in the place of the Maverick, Sen. John McCain.

I mean, who does this lady who has had no experience in Washington, and why does she think that having five children qualifies her to lead our country.  I mean, she has to be so well managed because if they didn’t keep her hidden she’d say something stupid and show what a bad choice she is for Vice President after all.

Pure Politics, or Is That Patriotism?

McCain has announced that he’s going to suspend his campaign to go back to Washington to address the financial crisis we find ourselves in:

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I have spoken to Senator Obama and informed him of my decision and have asked him to join me.

I am calling on the President to convene a meeting with the leadership from both houses of Congress, including Senator Obama and myself. It is time for both parties to come together to solve this problem.

We must meet as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans, and we must meet until this crisis is resolved.I am directing my campaign to work with the Obama campaign and the commission on presidential debates to delay Friday night's debate until we have taken action to address this crisis.
