Things Only God Can Do

cris photoshoped by djem

When ask you what are things that only God can do, what comes to mind?

I immediately think of the big things like creating the universe, the worldwide flood, or things like moving mountains.  Things that are supernatural or things that are out of the ordinary.

The truth is that there are many things that the Bible says that only God can do, things that we can see every day, but we need to know that these things are God in action.

Only God Can Bring People to Himself

In John 6:44 we read that in order for a person to come to know Christ, then Father must draw them to Himself:

No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

Which means that one way that you could look at the story of Jesus and Zaccheus would be that Jesus saw God at work in Zaccheus’ life and joined God in His work.

In today’s world you can see God at work in a life through common everyday things—things we might overlook.  You know that coworker that inquires after spiritual things?  That is a sign that God is at work—for only those that God is at work in are being drawn to Him.

Other Things that Only God Can Do

How about some other things that only God can do:

  • God draws people to Himself.
  • God causes people to seek after Him.
  • God reveals spiritual truth.
  • God convicts the world of guilt regarding sin.
  • God convicts the world of righteousness.
  • God convicts the world of judgment.

Each of these things indicate that God is at work in a situation.  Most of the time, we miss these things because they aren’t in neon lights, and that we haven’t fully comprehended the passages that talk about God’s work.

How to Be Aware of God’s Working

If we want to be those that see God at work and join Him in that work, we must start by preparing our hearts to be able to be aware of what’s happening around us.

Start by expecting an answer to prayer.

When you pray for wisdom to see God at work, do you expect to see it or are you using “Christian speak.”  Seriously, if you ask God to see Him at work, for you to be a vessel, be prepared when He takes you up on the offer.

After you pray, get up and watch to see what God does next.

This is important.  Instead of simply starting to take action, watch.  Take time to observe what’s going on around you.

Watch what people say to you.

Connect what they say with your prayers.

When you see someone ask you about the Lord, ask about spiritual things, or ask about what is right and wrong you know that God is at work.

Build that connection.

Once you see that God is at work, join Him in that work.  Take the opportunity to witness about your faith.  Meet the need that’s being presented.
