@Rachel: I really love the pairing of Christ as the bridegroom because I can relate to being a bridegroom myself. I can see the dynamic at work in my life and my marriage and my relationship with Him.

It’s easy to see that He pursues us, that He loves us, and that He will protect us. It’s great to have a God that loves us so much that He died for us.

I understand where AG is coming from (maybe it’s a women thing…). I often go to Christ as my Protector and Defender from the enemy. And we know He’ll come back in power for His ransomed bride! It is very comforting to a woman to take refuge in the Lord as her keeper, since we’re often vulnerable beings.

What strange mental images could those be? I mean, is it so strange to picture Christ being our defender and protector and the church being a source of comfort and encouragement for Him? (Remember that He sees the church through rose-colored glasses.)

Har har. No, I think it’s cool that God’s applied some of His character traits into marriage. Like the Father is our defender and protector, and the husband should be those things for his wife. And the Holy Spirit is the comfortor and encourager and the wife should be those things to the husband.
