@militarywifey: You definitely need to make sure that if you're going to be strict about a budget that you have to plan fun money. We tried to do this with a "Misc" category, but that always end up getting spent covering an overage instead of just being money that we could blow impulsively.

And that's the thing. Budgets are good in that they help you plan, they give you boundaries, but they can also make it hard to get wants instead of just needs. That's a good and bad thing. Budgets can attach guilt to buying wants because there's always something you need or could be saving for.

You really have to go into budgeting with an open mind, and some good ground rules.

Great post! I think we need to hear this. We cannot live legalistically by a budget, we need to allow some wiggle room. At the same time, a budget is definetely a good thing, as it allows us to keep our spending in check.

There are far too many people in this country that spend beyond their means, so it is important to be frugal. At the same time, living your life only for frugality you miss out on a lot of fun. Somewhere there is a balance in the midst of all this.

militarywifeys last blog post..<a href="http://whereverheleadsme.wordpress.com/2008/07/01/bruce-ware-submission-abuse-etc-part-2/">Bruce Ware, submission, abuse, etc. (part 2)</a>
