What to Look For When Moving

SONY DSC

Before my wife and I got married, she was living in an apartment with three girls—each sharing the rent.  Before we got married, we decided it would be beneficial to get her an apartment she could get “just so” before the big day.  So, we started searching the area near my job looking for something that was appropriate.

The first place that we found that seemed to fit the bill we put a deposit down.  Except my family didn’t like it when we went back to look at it.  I never did get that security deposit back, but that’s a whole other story.

One of the things that scared my dad was the neighborhood that the apartment was in—it was a four unit apartment made out of an old house, and the front door’s glass was broken when he went to look.  But even when we did settle on a house, we found that the neighborhood was one of the biggest things that you had to take into consideration.

The neat thing is, that was 7 years ago, and there are now websites that help you in finding apartments, like Chicago Apartments.  This site will help you find Chicago apartments for rent.  It has tips on how to move, contact numbers for different places, the price ranges for various neighborhoods (a good tip off to where the good places to be are and where are the crumby ones) and a good search tool.

So, make sure you go online before your next move, and make sure you tour the neighborhood during the day and at night (just like you would before buying a house), because you don’t want to get into a renting agreement where you can’t get your money back.
