What’s in a Name?

When’s the last time that you heard someone say “he looks like an Edward”1.

Names are something that stick with most of us for our entire lives.  Names define us.  In Biblical times, names said something about the person’s character.  Even today people will change their name if they think it will get them ahead.  Some stars will try to come up with creative names.

Whether you’ve picked one of the Top 100 Baby Boy Names or Top 100 Baby Girl Names as given by these lists, or you’ve chosen to be more unique, when you name your child there’s a lot wrapped up in that name.

You’re choosing something that fits with their last name.  You’re giving a set of connotations to that new individual.  You’re coming up with their possible future nicknames.  You’re controlling how much they will be teased!

Yes, there’s a lot wrapped up in a name.  The child may still be as sweet, but names can carry authority and weight all their own.

For our children we chose Biblical names, at least so far.  And deciding each name was different.

Our first child got a name we both liked.  Ladies at my wife’s baby shower tried to help us pick the second.  Our third baby was down to two different names on our own.

How did you choose your baby’s name(s)?
