Do You Know this Man?

bobbarrThe man on your right—do you know who he is?  What if I told you that he’s running for President of the United States of America?

The man on the right is U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, and he is the Libertarian Candidate, and he asked something of the Republican and Democrat candidates for President that I think that they should take him up on:

“In congratulatory letters I am sending, I challenge Senators Obama and McCain to meet me in weekly debates in cities across America with just the candidates and a moderator to keep order,” former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr said in a news release on Wednesday.

“Let us argue the issues, after which the American people can make their decision on Election Day. Surely the citizens of the greatest nation on earth deserve no less.”

And he’s right.  Why is it than in a country as big and diverse as ours we are limited to only seeing two points of view?  Why does the media control us to the point that we can’t hear from other people that are running, that are on the ballot?  Is it because we’d like them better?

I didn’t like it when Fox News tried to slight Ron Paul.  I didn’t agree with the man on everything, but he was running as were the other men on the Republican side.

And don’t give me an “is he electable” test.  That’s not the media’s job.  The media’s job is to give the people access to the candidates, to see their positions and to hear them out.  If there’s a person that’s on my ballot, I’d like to hear from them.  I want to hear their ideas.  I want the other candidates to hear their ideas.

It seems to me that we’ve had enough of two parties having the same ideas to the point that we must discuss the person more than the ideas.

  1. I must echo your sentiments, Min. The two party system is long past it’s expiration date.

Oh, and I had no idea Bob Barr was running on the libertarian ticket. He served as the Rep for my area of Georgia and my Dad is a huge fan of his. :o)

  2. @Amy Brigham: I believe that the Libertarians were hoping that Ron Paul would be the Libertarian candidate, but he told everyone that he’s staying in the Republican party– I believe that he’s trying to secure a speaking opportunity at the convention.

It’s funny to read the early history of our country and see that the House and Senate were practically expected to pick the President, and electors were supposed to express their conscience more. Then again, there also wasn’t direct election of Senators either, and I’m sure the House turned over more than this gerrymandered mess we have now.

I’m afraid I have no good road-map to solve it all!
