What You Want in a Light

HID Light

Just how bright should any flashlight or light be?  Bright enough so that someone can see what it is they are working on or where they are going.

When do you use flashlights?  For me, if I can keep my kids from using them as toys, trying to find their toys, I use them to check around the house at night to find things, I’ve used them to look under furniture, but I’ve also used them outside to examine something in low light.

One of the hardest things to do without some kind of light is to look into an engine, look under different things, or basically see with detail things that are obscured in the dark.

When you get into these circumstances you need something bigger than a pen light to see, so you should always have some kind of light that you can place somewhere and that is easily accessible.  Make sure that it’s something durable, like HID lights…

HID equipment lights get you just that.  HID (or High Intensity Discharge) lamps produce light by striking an electrical arc across tungsten electrodes housed inside a specially designed inner glass tube.

This tube is filled with both gas and metals. The gas aids in the starting of the lamps. Then, the metals produce the light once they are heated to a point of evaporation. Like fluorescent lamps, HID lamps require a ballast to start and maintain their operation.

Technical details aside, these lamps actually have a whiter and brighter color than the standard flashlights that you find in the store.  Certain flashlights will burn for 75 minutes or more, and will have a recharger, so you’re not always going out to buy batteries.

Whatever flashlight you end up getting, make sure it’s durable and will last you a while.  You don’t want one that will break easily– incase the power goes out!
