God Sent a Rainbow

Rainbow Header

The Sunday before Memorial Day this year I’ll again have the privilege of sharing God’s Word with the people of a small church nearby.  This year I was drawn to the many things that God calls us to remember, and that He called His children to remember down the annals of time.  So, I’d like to share some of these thoughts with you, beginning with the Rainbow.

The first recorded instance of a rainbow in the sky is in Genesis 9.  Noah has just left the Ark and has offered a burnt offering, and God makes a promise to Noah and his descendants telling them that He will never again destroy the world by flood.  This promise is in full view each and every time a rainbow is seen.

However, what the rainbow also calls into remembrance is the circumstances that surrounded the flood.  If you remember from earlier in Genesis, the people were engaged in any and every kind of immoral behavior imaginable:

And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. – Genesis 6:5

It was for this that God judged the Earth, choosing the only family that was living righteously to be the only ones to remain alive.

Down through time we’ve seen wicked nations be judged.  It follows the same predictable pattern, and yet each of these nations fall into the trap of believing that they are truly able to do whatever they wish and they will not be judged.

The same can be said for America.  I believe that many believe that America can never be conquered, that we enjoy some kind of special status with God or that it is not possible that we could ever be conquered.  This is foolishness.  One only has to look at Rome or any other great empire to see the folly of this thought.

The same goes with people and their own sins.  We may believe as a culture or an individual that it is fine to continue in a specific sin because we do not see an immediate consequence– and yet the sign of the Rainbow and the story of the Flood shows that God will not always be merciful, and He is just.  He will eventually pay the wages of sin.

So, remember the Rainbow– remember what it teaches.  It is a blessing that came out of a judgement.

  1. @onein6billion: A typical response. When will the adherents to the cult of science realize that I’m not talking about how something happens, but the why?

  2. Why? Physics. Physics is always the ultimate why. Chemistry is the physics of atoms interacting. Biology is the chemistry of life. But physics (gravity, electromagnetic theory, and nuclear theory) is the “why” of everything.
