Sanctity of Human Life

A Walk in the Park

A few weeks back I was scheduled to preach a sermon at my local church as it was my Pastor’s last week of cancer treatments.  It was Sanctity of Human Life Sunday, and I contracted a stomach virus on the Friday before the service and was unable to preach that Sunday.

However, I did think through what I would speak, and thought I would share some of my thoughts with you.

What is the main difference between a human and an animal?  Said slightly differently, what makes a human a human?  The Bible states that man is the only creation made in the in the image of God.  We’re also the only ones that have a soul.

The Eternal Component

It is this eternal soul that makes us different from the other beings that inhabit this planet.  Our body may grow old and die, but our soul remains.  The Bible clearly states that it will remain in one of two places– either eternally in Heaven with God or in Hell apart from God.

Human life is sacred and deserves respect because of its eternal component– because of Whom it is that it reflects.

Human Life on Earth is Important

God holds His creation in high regard.  From the first murder to the present day, God has held those that take another’s life as a serious offense requiring death– or the worst punishment that could be thought up (in the case of Cain).  Those guilty of intentionally putting another to death were not spared.

When it comes to the innocent unborn, the infirm or the mentally/physically challenged, we are still bound by the same decree, that we will not end life for life is a gift and is the domain of God.

More Important is Where the Human Will Spend Eternity

However, even though life here on this Earth is important, I want you to remember that it is but a short time compared with Eternity.  Dr. Bob Jones, III, used to have us complete a phrase he started which said:

The most sobering reality in the world today is that people are dying and going to Hell today.

It’s a terminal disease that we’re all born with.  It’s something that we will have to live with for much longer than we will be on this Earth.  So, therefore, it is much more important that we focus our energies on reaching those that are lost with the life-changing (and life-saving) message of the Gospel.

I’m not saying that we should not be fighting against abortion or euthanasia.  What I am saying is that we should be more passionate about seeing souls saved than we are about getting abortion overturned.
