Experience or Degree?

keyboard work When I went to college Computer Science was just starting out as a course curriculum that you could pursue.  Yes, I’m a Computer geek by trade.  In any event, there was a lot of discussion at the time as to whether a Master’s Degree would actually be of value to those of us going to write computer programs or would experience be more beneficial.

I believe that this applies to many majors, not just Computer Science, but what makes the story interesting is that there are not just those two options!

Shortly after I started in the workforce, Microsoft and other organizations started to offer certifications in different technologies.  Besides being able to put little logos on our business cards, we were able to say that we had a certain level of experience with certain technologies.

Now, there are groups out there that can help you get certified in things like MCDBA Training called QuickCert.com.  QuickCert has as its mission to provide IT professionals with the preparation for certification.

Now, if they could only make you attend the tests then it would be great– that’s where I’ve always failed.  I took some classes toward an MCP with Microsoft in ASP.NET and never managed to take the test.  One of these days!

  1. I vote for experience. Working experience is more important for your practice, than any degrees, I think everyone will agree. But a diploma gives you an opportunity to realize your ideas and to develop your personality. That’s why it’s important also.
