How Many Minutes Are You Using?

boy with phone My dad is a pretty funny guy when it comes to cell phones.  He pays for two lines off of my brother’s account– one for himself and one for my sister.  The deal is that he pays a flat rate of $15 a month for each phone (just for having the line) and that gives him unlimited calling nights and weekends.  However, day minutes come at a flat fee– and my dad doesn’t want to pay anything extra.  So, if anyone calls him that’s not on the account– regardless of the reason– he doesn’t answer it (with very few exceptions).

We picked up our first cell phone last year when we switched to Vonage.  We wanted to make sure that we had some backup in case the power or Internet was down for some reason.  So, we buy a card once every three months to make sure that we keep the same number for the very few people that have it.

The problem that I’ve had with looking at cell phone plans is that I have a hard to being able to compare “apples to apples.”  The features change from company to company as do the hours of free minutes and the underlying fees.  So far, I’m hard pressed to find a plan that competes with the phone card, but there have been a few times that I wished we had a few more minutes or that we both had a phone instead of the emergency one.

Wirefly promises to help in doing that kind of comparison.  Wirefly’s Wireless Wizard is a tool that asks you how many minutes you use each month, and how, and then shows you all the plans that meet your specific calling needs, whether that be from the same carrier you currently have, or another provider.

So, basically, it does what is difficult for any normal person to do any other way– be able to look across the sites to find the best plan.  Do you have/need a cell phone?  Are you sure you have the best plan?

You know, we had a bag phone WA-AY back when cell phones first became available…long ago…and about 8 or more years ago we decided it wasn’t a necessary monthly expenditure any more. I really don’t miss it!

And if I get stranded somewhere, chances are pretty good that whoever stops will have a cell I can use!

Besides, God is better than a cell phone. He really has brought me instant help via prayer when stranded on the roadside…I prayed and immediately a cop was there to help. And this on a lonely country highway!

Cell phones do effect our feeling of independence from God, that much is certain. I’m beginning to wonder how much our feelings of detachment from God (or that God is distant) is a result of our own decisions to try to do more and more without Him.

That’s quotable…and I just might quote you on it. Very thought provoking. And goes along with why God has to shake up our lives a bit to get our attention…

    Hm….
