Harnessing the Power of the Sun
One of the things that I admire most about God’s Creation is how limitless it is in the power that it can supply. The fact that the power of a Hurricane is so many more times more powerful than that of our atomic bombs. And how power can be derived from the sun, wind and other sources– sources that are renewable.
If we could figure out how to properly harness the power of the things that God has so richly blessed us with we could improve our way of life and be good caretakers of His Creation.
To that end, the U.S. Department of Energy and BP sponsor the BP Solar Decathlon every other year to build solar powered houses. They select 20 university teams from around the world, and they are tasked with creating completely solar powered houses.
The competition is on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., and is for an entire week. This year, that week is October 11-19.
BP, primarily known as a company that sells gasoline, is invested in other forms of power, knowing full well that the next generation is going to want cleaner air and better performance. Just look at the popularity of hybrid cars. As the technology increases, each company will have to do research to keep up– and BP itself is making sure that it’s doing its part.
BP produces more than 200 MW of solar technology every year. Did you know that an area 200 miles square covered with solar panels could provide all the electricity the world needs?
In any case, I look forward to reading about how this year turns out, and hope that we will find a way to harness the Sun’s power and be able to, in turn, use this to lower costs and keep America and Britain on the forefront of technology and innovation.
