Our Daughters as Cornerstones

The Psalmist has something interesting to say about our daughters:

That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace: – Psalm 144:12

There are two things in this verse that describe our daughters– one talks about what they are and the other the quality.

Cornerstones

Our daughters, as helpmeets, are the backbone of the family. They and their husbands are part of the foundation, but with the amount of time the children have with their mother our daughters will have a greater amount of time to influence the next generation. Think about all of the expressions that talk about how influential mothers are:

  • “Behind every great man is a great woman”
  • “The hand the rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.”

It’s a wonder that women ever want to give away their greatest strength and greatest chance to make an impact to someone else!

A cornerstone is also a stone of strength:

Our daughters are to be molded, shaped, and polished so they are strong cornerstones who actively glorify God and stand as a steadfast testimony to future generations. They are to be fully able to support that which they have been called to bear with dignity, virtue, and strength.

Beauty

Not an outward beauty, but a beauty that comes from within. This is where our whole discussion on modesty and where modesty and humility comes from– the heart. Our daughter’s beauty needs to be one that attracts people to the Savior, that glorifies him and is attractive of a family that seeks Him above all.

Wow, what a tall order. Are we as parents looking at what our daughters should become and preparing them for these eventual roles?
