Conservative Christians Don’t Want Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani Have you heard the latest buzz? The New York Times reports:

Alarmed at the possibility that the Republican Party might pick Rudolph Giuliani as its presidential nominee despite his support for abortion rights, a coalition of influential Christian conservatives is threatening to back a third-party candidate. [Hat Tip: Jill Stanek]

It appears that many Conservative Christians can’t come around to voting for someone pro-choice, as well as the other social conservative positions.

What this means is that if the Republicans go through with nominating him as their candidate for President, there’s a strong possibility that Conservative Christians will either not vote or pick up someone else.

The Evangelical Outpost makes the case that the primary voters should not pick Giuliani:

Since the GOP is never going to nominate Hillary, the most rational choice for Group A [those who like Hillary] would be to skip the Republican primary altogether and vote in the Democratic primaries. The most rational choice for Group C [Those who do not want Giuliani] would be C3–anyone other than Giuliani. So what should Group B [Those who like Giuliani but don’t want Hillary more] choose? Even though their first preference is B2, they have to consider how Group C will vote.

For Group B, choice B3 is what game theorists call the minimax condition, the choice which minimizes the maximum possible loss. They don’t get Giuliani but they don’t get Hillary either. (That same outcome, by the way, is the optimum choice for Group C.)

Even if they were unable to communicate with Group C, the most rational choice for Group B would be to choose the minimax. But they have even more incentive because social conservatives (Group C) have communicated to Giuliani supporters (Group B) that they will not accept option C2. All things being equal, it would therefore be irrational for primary voters to choose Giuliani…. [Hat tip: Vox Day]

So, regardless of whether you agree with the vote your conscience or vote who you think could win, it appears as though the Conservative Christians have thrown down the gauntlet against Giuliani, and made voting for him a foolish option.

  1. My husband and I wouldn’t vote for him. We would rather vote for an independant runner. The way that I figure, if that means that socialist Clinton wins, then maybe the republican party will realize the error of it’s ways and return to being actual republican instead of democrats with red ties on.

  2. I agree with Jenna. My husband and I won’t vote for him either. Yes, Hillary would be horrible. But even more horrible would be for Christians to get behind a pro-abortion candidate. If we do that once, the Republicans will continue to put up candidates that are liberal on social issues.

By taking a stand against Guliani, we may have to deal with 4 years of Hillary, but hopefully it will wake up the Republican party and help them get back to their conservative roots.

  3. Nope. I won’t vote for Giuliani, Romney, McCain, or Thompson. Mike Huckabee is my pick, and if he doesn’t get the Rep. nomination, I’ll not vote for the Rep. or the Dem. nominee in the election.

  4. As a diehard liberal (practically a socialist), I’m absolutely loving the in-fighting amongst the repub types. Will we have to change the title to “Hail to the Chieftess”?????

  5. For me, it’s not that concerning to have a difference of opinion about who makes the best nominee at this stage– I mean, we’re still in the primaries, a time where we should pick a candidate to put forward that best reflects our beliefs and views. (Disclaimer: I’m registered conservative, and do not vote in Republican primaries in my state.) At this point it is neither a given that Hillary or Rudy will be the nominees next summer. There are any of a number of things that could happen between now and then.

However, it is important that people know where they stand, what is negotiable and not negotiable, and it’s not bad to set out some rules and see where it goes. This is definitely the place for people to express a pro-life stance and speak against a candidate in your own party whereas next summer/fall it would not be.
