Watching Your House From Far Away
I’ve told you before about the neighborhood that we live in. We’ve had an in-dash CD player taken right out of our car and a package of maternity clothes taken right off our porch.
In June, when we went to my brother’s wedding, I was beginning to wonder if my computer and other valuables were safe inside my house. It was then that I started to wonder if I could use my webcam to monitor what was going on.
Meet home camera, a web service that’s in beta that promises to meet the needs of those wishing to see their home away from home. They hook into your web cameras at home, and allow for motion sensing and other pictures to be streamed on the web.
To launch the free beta, go to the site above and key in your e-mail address and a password– you’re not required to get a credit card number or anything. They’ll send you an e-mail giving you information to activate your account. Then, all you’ll have to do is to download their software. Hook it up to your webcams, and you can get the pictures in your e-mail or to your mobile phone– when your camera detects motion!
I have to admit, I don’t know about whether I want some other service to actually be monitoring my house, looking at what’s going on in my basement. True, there’s not much that’s scandalous (except maybe some drying laundry) but the idea that some other company that I don’t know would have access to potentially sensitive stuff– things that I may not know that can be seen– is something to watch out for.
Fortunately, my one web cam is on top of my screen and it points right at the user and my clothes dryer. Give it a try if you’d like to see things from afar. I think you’ll be impressed.
