Where Do You Stay On Vacation?

This summer my family had to travel south in order to attend my brother’s wedding.  My oldest son was the ring bearer and I was asked to be part of the wedding party.

My brother knows how much I like to save money, and being a frugal guy himself, he tried his best to arrange for the cheapest lodging for each of the families when they came down.  We were told that we were going to have part of a house– or at least a bathroom– when we arrived.

Don’t get me wrong, the family that we stayed with was wonderful, but we were all put into one room (two adults, three children) and we had to wait to get a playpen for our 4 month old to sleep in.

When it’s a vacation, I find that you usually have only two alternatives– find some friends/relatives to stay with (and make both sets of people inconvenienced) or find a hotel and hope to find a cheap rate.

Now there’s a third option: Renting someone else’s house.

For instance, say I was looking to spend some time at Disney World.  Instead of trying to find family in the area, or pay a lot of a hotel down there, I could simply check out Orlando vacation rentals and look for a house that had the right size for my family.  I would have multiple places to choose from, and contact the owner directly to find out more information.

So, on your next vacation, why not check out Renting a House, and see if the price is right for you?

We looked in to this idea a few years ago when we were headed to England. We ended up renting a Carriage House, but there were many house swap options! I think they made a movie about that or something.

My mom and dad did that when they took a vacation to Hawaii. I heard nothing but good things about their experience, and how comfortable they were. :)

There is also some Amish or Mennonite travel guide, where they open up their home to travelers for a very affordable rate. Wish I could remember what the travel guide was called, but it listed names/addresses/phone numbers and how many rooms they had available. They’d even let you set up a tent on their property for a very small fee. My husband does not like staying with people he doesn’t know, so this wasn’t an option for us, but I thought it was a grand idea. I’m always up for meeting new people from different walks of life.

So I think your home swap idea is a great one. Think we could find a huge condo in Kentucky and all share it…that is, if we ever plan a MInTheGap Creation Museum field trip?

Colleen– I think there must be a movie on the topic, and it is a great idea.

Jenna– It must be nice being in a “home” where you can actually have the homey feel without feeling that your intruding.

Mary– That’s interesting that the Amish would open their home, must be a kind that has electricity? In any case, still in the planning stages for the Creation Museum. Maybe we can stay at Ken Ham’s home…
