Clothing Styles and Morals

Proud Father

They say that many things follow the path of the pendulum.  The politics of a nation will alter from Conservative to Liberal, from war to peace.  They say that fashion goes in circles as well– hang on to the bell bottoms, they told me, for they will be back.  And they were right– they’re back with a different name.

I’m no expert on fashion– for that see Rebecca.  What I do know is that for all the talk of things swirling around, they never quite go totally back to where they were, but they show the longing for that time.

The Patriot Ledger out of Boston carries an article talking about how the “Girlie Girls” are back for this season’s prom.  What they mean to say is that this year’s fashion for the big dance is more about showing glamor than skin.  Suffice it to say, there are some that didn’t get the memo.

‘‘One of the major trends in fashion right now is a return to femininity, a return to glamour,’’ said Macy’s spokeswoman Elina Kazan. ‘‘It’s all about being pretty, feeling pretty …a resurgence of the feminine.’’

Kazan said that bright colors and short hemlines are in style this year but the dress will depend on the personal style of the girl and the feel of the prom.

‘‘I think it’s more going to be a girl is going to want to really glamour herself up,’’ Kazan said. ‘‘Think of the glamour goddesses of the ’40s and ’50s.’’

So, let me clear all this talk up for you…  It’s still all about me.  It’s still all about what I feel like wearing.  But we’re going to say it’s about glamor rather than skin because somehow saying it may make people feel better.

In reality, girls are getting away with wearing less and any dress that doesn’t bare the navel, the back, and most of the thigh is progress for our celebrity driven culture.  And that is the real issue.

We’ve traveled so far, and moved the line so far away that we think that we’re good when we’re away from the world’s new line.  When in reality we’ve crossed the line a long time ago, and have been deceiving ourselves because we are better than the world.

What are you wearing?  I’m not talking your outer clothing, per se.  Spiritually, physically, are you just a little better than the world so that they know that you’re a good guy/girl, or are you following after true morality and sticking out like someone who’s dressed from head to toe?

  1. Thanks for the compliment, MIn!

You are right about styles. Last night we were watching an old movie and, while many of the outfits looked very contemporary, the fits were quite different: skimming, not skin-tight, and not a bit of cleavage in sight.

Sadly, the “it’s all about me” attitude is just as prevalent within the church as out in the world. In the early days of the blog, a group in our church was involved in a conversation about the problem of how some of the young ladies dressed. I was astonished to find that the average fashion blogger was more supportive of my views on modesty than some church leaders.

Which just goes to show we are better off to find out what people really think via conversation than just accepting what the media tells us.

  2. I was so proud of our pastor last week, he was preaching in Phil. 4:8-9, and touched pointedly on women’s fashions and how they affect men. Sadly, we needed this mentioned at our church. Low waisted jeans pulling down as a woman stands up in the pew in front of us is not what I want to see right before I start singing praises…

And, am I the only one that still feels mildly shocked at a woman at church wearing a sundress? Shoulders showing even with modest straps? Please understand I’m not judging, I didn’t see any cleavage at all, just shoulders. I didn’t lose any respect for the individuals, and in fact, it had me looking at my daughter’s sundresses in a whole new light, so it was a good thing.

    What do you all think?

  3. Are you talking about all sleeveless dresses, Mary? I definitely agree when it comes to spaghetti straps or halters (active discussion on halter dresses currently on my blog). I was shocked last summer at all the lovely, modest Christian women wearing halter dresses to weddings. I suppose they have no idea that to anyone seeing them seated from the back they appear naked!

I have never considered a sleeveless dress to be a problem, though, even when as a young lady I worked in a store with a dress code that didn’t allow sleeveless. Usually it’s too cold – either naturally or from air conditioning – to wear sleeveless without a sweater or jacket.

  4. Thanks for the links, I checked them both out and left comments!

I have nothing against sleeveless, just strappy sleeveless. I think shoulders are sensuous (and strappy dresses usually call attention to cleavage as well). If a dress says “sexy” in any way, I’d choose the “better safe than sorry” approach and veer toward modest.

Also, if you think about it, most of the strappy dresses have a more fitted top that outlines the female curvature…

I just can’t think of a good reason to wear them unless I was going to keep a light sweater on the whole time…

  5. I think you girls have a point here– if we’re at church to worship God, the point should not be to attract the opposite sex.

I’ll leave the strapless, strapped, shoulders discussion to you.
