By Their Fruits You Will Know Them

Blonde Girl

One of the problems with acting and dressing one way while being another person is that people will identify you by how you carry yourself and what they see without getting to know you as a person.  You can attempt to tell people that you are not what they see, and even blame them and call them judgmental, but the truth is that how you act, what you wear, and how you carry yourself has a lot of bearing as to what people think of you.

One 13 year old is learning this the hard way, and I would suggest that the advice given by Dear Abby fails to be up to the task at hand.  Miss NOT A SLUT IN S. CAROLINA has the problem that boys are not treating her as the fine girl that she is and are, instead, calling her names, asking her to engage in sex with them, and asking her to be their little slave girl.  She has gotten so upset about it that she almost committed suicide five months ago.

Whose Pleasure Do You Seek?

I believe that we as the church (a collection of people, not the building) have been slowly and steadily drifting away from God and toward self.  I don’t think that we’ve necessarily gotten there because of a direct desire or a hard left turn, but gradually– and all in the name of Christ, mind you– we have veered off from our course.

Perhaps it was the desire to see the number of souls saved that were saved during the Great Awakening.

It Could Have Been Much More than a Purse

This past Tuesday, Barbara Bush’s purse was stolen from the table where she was sitting, and fortunately all that’s missing is the purse and her cell phone.  When I first heard about this, I wondered where the secret service agents were and the AP reports that at no time was Miss Bush out of their sites.

However, this was not the only problem that agents had this week: An agent, on his own time, was involved in an “altercation” and was badly beaten.  The Secret Service is now claiming that it was an attempted mugging.

The question that went through my mind when talking this over with a friend was “what is the value of Barbara Bush?”  Specifically to a terrorist.

Firefox 2.0

Why are you still using Internet Explorer 6.0? You know who you are. You’re that person that just uses whatever web browser came installed on your machine (you’re probably writing documents with Word Pad) and you keep saying “but it works.”

Sure, you’ll upgrade to IE 7.0 (which just came out) and be amazed by technology that has been around for years and think it’s new. Or maybe you’ll never get around to trying tabs, but there are many more features out there in the world of browsers that you’ll never see if you don’t take the plunge.

How Skinny is Too Skinny?

There has been a battle brewing in the modeling world over the dress sizes of models. It started with Spain banning models with a body mass index less than 18 and there has been an uproar ever since. Both sides have entered the foray– some designing outfits for a terribly overweight woman, others through boycotts, and others by trying to use the legislative route to effect a change in Spain’s policy.

We’ve discussed here about the dangers of being skinny and how that we should look to God and and be happy with what we are blessed with rather than to do something to make us into something unhealthy.

Well, the latest entry into this debate happened November 14, 2006 when model Ana Carolina Reston died of a generalized infection. She was 21 years old and weighed only 88 pounds.

Godly Wife: Who Are You Seeking to Please?

November 28th, 2006 Viewed 4753 times
This entry is part 2 of 18 in the series Godly Wife

Wives, let’s just say that your task is not easy.  In most cases, the man that you may have married may not have the spiritual desire that you have.  Or, you may have desires that you have received through your experience at home, at school, or at church that tell you to seek to be something that may go against the Word of God.

The question for you, wives, is what matters most to you as a wife?  Is it pleasing God, or pleasing yourself and hoping that God concurs?

The last time we looked at is your husband your master, and we’re asking the men to make sure they take their placement in the homes as the leaders of the home seriously.  They will be accountable to how they lead.

Perhaps You Should Have Gotten Married First

Jaime PresslyJaime Pressly made it official on Jay Leno’s show on Thursday night, November 16th:

I’m ashamed to say that I was living in sin with my boyfriend.  We have been dating for about 18 months, and during that time we engaged in sinful activity– activity that should only be done between married spouses.

I’m announcing this, because I can no longer hide that I am four months pregnant and we want to keep the baby.  I’m letting you know that my boyfriend and I are getting married and making the situation right.

I’m asking the young ladies out there that are my fans to forgive me, to not follow my example and to remain abstinent until marriage.

Or at least, that’s what she should have said.

Instead, Miss Pressly stated that she’s excited: “I’m healthy, the baby’s healthy.  We’re good.”

We’ve talked about how the simplicity of life has been robbed from us.  Now we see the logical next step– the glorification of immoral behavior.  You see, at one point in time Miss Pressly would probably had disappeared for a little while until the marriage was out or something could have been arranged.  There once was a stigma associated with sleeping around, to being sexually available to your boyfriend.

Now we’re seeing the total opposite of the spectrum where people like Miss Pressly and Ms. Johansson are able to glorify promiscuity or pre-marital sex and they are exalted.

Ms. Johansson, as you recall, was the woman who claimed that “socially aware” citizens should get themselves tested for HIV bi-yearly.  Her new statement is just as shocking:

“We are supposed to be liberated in America but if our President had his way, we wouldn’t be educated about sex at all. Every woman would have six children and we wouldn’t be able to have abortions.”

This glorification of self indulgence is one of the factors that is polluting and eroding marriage.  It is tearing apart families, spreading disease, and causing instability in lives and yet it is that which is lifted on high as something to be happy about. A recent survey shows just how this problem is effecting our culture stating that 4 in 10 babies are born out of wedlock. And contrary to what you’re probably thinking, the problem is not teens. We’ve glorified cohabitation and pre-marital sex, and one wonders how we’ll ever go back.

I firmly believe in abstinence outside of marriage, fidelity in marriage.  I believe that it should be practiced for the following reasons:

  • It follows the Biblical example of how the church and Christ interrelate.
  • It allows us to give ourselves wholly to our spouse.
  • It teaches us that sexual pleasure is something that we seek to give to our spouse rather than to get solely for self.

For further thought, check out the post on Pre-Marital Sex on MyPrivateJoy.  In any case, if you practiced abstinence and fidelity we wouldn’t have to be tested, Ms. Johansson, and we would have the support system of our marriages, and we would be putting the establishment of that relationship it its correct location instead of giving it the afterthought that many seem to give it today.

Godly Husband: Are You a Leader?

olderhusbandandwifeheader.jpgMen, are you the spiritual leader in your home?  I can hear the excuses now:

  • But she knows more scripture than I do!
  • Women are better at praying than men are.
  • I take the family to church, don’t I?
  • Did you say supper was on the table?

Form of Sound Words

Psalm With Flower(also posted at Everyday in Grace)
The reading of John MacArthur books is an enormous feast and inspiration to me. An amazing number of questions have got the clear answers and I really can see the importance of the proper and faithful preaching of God’s Word.

The watered-down Gospel, pleasing to the ear of a listener, calling him to believing, forgetting to call him to repentance, does not produce good fruit.

Wednesday Tech Help

I’d like to take a moment to introduce you to another series I’ll be starting this Wednesday called “Tech Help.  I’ve been asked a few times about what browser plugins I use for Firefox, what WordPress plugins I use and other technical questions.

I hope to use this post in the week to help other bloggers and just computer users in general pick up some tips and tricks I’ve found along my technology path.  As some of you know, I write computer software for a day job, so at times these posts my delve into the really obscure, but I hope that the general user will find something of value.
