Should You Be Tested?

If you listen to Scarlett Johansson, you should make sure that you’ve been tested for HIV.

“I get tested for HIV twice a year. … One has to be socially aware,” she says. “It’s part of being a decent human, to be tested for STDs. It’s just disgusting behavior when people don’t. It’s so irresponsible.”

Why is it that she has to be tested? Because her belief that it’s ok to have sexual relations with anyone has made it dangerous (for her and her partner) not to be.

We are quickly becoming a nation (if we’re not already there) of people that believe that sex is something we do as just another form of recreation. To that end, they believe that one should be free to have as many or as few partners as they wish. Ms. Johansson went on the record to say that although she’s not a serial monogamist (one that only mates with one man at a time) she does try to keep to one man when she’s in a relationship:

“I do think on some basic level we are animals, and by instinct we kind of breed accordingly,” she says. “But as much as I believe that, I work really hard when I’m in a relationship to make it work in a monogamous way.”

Evolutionary teaching could explain the whole “we’re animals and I’m most like a bunny” concept that she has or uses to explain away the fact that she has the morals of an alley cat, but it is more of an excuse than a reason.

You see, it’s true that we are all born with a sinful nature– a nature that has rebelled against God and is lawless. We do have some degree of an inner compass (conscience) but that can be muted. For example, I’m sure that there are things that your conscience has nudged you away from (just like Jiminey Cricket tried to do for Pinocchio!), but if you chose to do it anyway, it just got easier every time thereafter.

I’m sure that Ms. Johansson did not suddenly become promiscuous. Most little girls I know of grow up dreaming for that one special guy, the white dress, the wedding, and the house with the children. It’s certainly possible that something in her past could have made her instead hope to be in just about any guy’s bed that would fit some abstract standard, but it’s highly unlikely.

When used in marriage, sexual relations can bond two people together like nothing else. The Bible gives this relationship a special position. Jesus said that while all other sin is external to a person, sexual sin is internal. He/She who joins his body to a promiscuous woman/man shares themselves with that person.

If I were conducting this interview, I’d tell Ms. Johansson that there was a much cheaper and more fulfilling way to ensure that I didn’t get AIDS– abstinence before marriage, fidelity within marriage.

  1. I’m sorry but this is way too hilarious for such a serious subject!
“Disgusting and irresponsible” to not get tested for STDs? How immature. How CLUELESS. At least the poor girl realizes that her lifestyle is dangerous.
“Serial monogamy”? Like being a one man woman is akin to being sentenced to the whole ball and chain. It’s totally incomprehensible to her that it’s the best way, the only way. Who is this woman anyway?

  2. From Wikipedia:

Scarlett Johansson (born November 22, 1984) is an American film actress. She rose to fame with her role in 1998’s The Horse Whisperer and subsequently became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after young actresses after her critically acclaimed roles in Ghost World, Lost in Translation and Girl with a Pearl Earring, the latter two earning her Golden Globe Award nominations in 2003. Johansson has since established herself as a lead actress, having appeared in several notable films between 2004 and 2006.

I don’t know what happens to people once they get “famous”. Either they lose some thought processes or something. Perhaps it’s that the people that she must hang around all have loose morals. I’m not sure. In any case, she must be influential to some people otherwise people wouldn’t be interviewing her and commenting on her sex life…

  3. Does she even have a clue what “monogamy” actually means? Somewhat of a paradox to use the word “serial” next to the word “monogamy” basically disregards the entire meaning of the word. Get a dictionary honey.

Hollywood has no high morals and basically teaches people to run to temptation rather than flee from it. I wonder how many of them actually do have STD’s? And why aren’t publicizing it? Kind of a double-standard. They don’t want people to know that promiscuity has it’s vile consequences. Yet push the whole agenda of free sex.

  4. Fame does it to you. fame and power. And money.
Corruptible powers of this world, dangerous and impossible to stand against unless you have a solid foundation. And even when you do, you are not secure. Just look what happended to Britney Spears… She honestly tried in the beginning, but failed totally in the end.
    This is very, very sad.

  5. I guess it’s possible that you begin to derive who you are by the reaction you get from people. Since this woman is getting so many accolades for her looks– and no dobut plenty of people interested in her because of it– she could easily get sucked into “hey, I like this, and it’s fun. I just have to be safe” mentality. However, what happens when the attention, etc., end?

  6. Is it just me or does the idea that we are animals and have intercourse for breeding purposes, completely contradict the use of birth control and abortion?

The foolishness of the world astounds me.

  7. Um… socially aware?
Getting tested for STDs is… socially aware.

Dear me. How ridiculous. Well, I suppose I’m not socially aware then! I won’t get tested for STDs. I have no need to do that, as I’m committed to *one* special man I’m going to marry, and until then we’ll remain pure.

  8. I’m with you there, Anna S. It’s probably be more socially aware to wear a t-shirt that says “I’m as loose as an alley cat, but at least I’ve been tested.”
