Woman Hosted Alcohol, Sex Parties for Teens

Patricia HartwellThe problem here is that parents are getting way to busy and trusting those that cannot be trusted. Another example of this phenomenon: Patricia Hartwell.

Lexington County deputies have taken a woman into custody who they say hosted alcohol and sex parties for teenagers.

Deputies arrested 46-year-old Patricia Hartwell. She’s charged with six counts of transferring beer to a minor, five counts of transferring liquor to a minor and five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Deputies say the parties were for students at White Knoll High School, and these parties happened regularly over a two-year period. Investigators say Hartwell encouraged boys and girls to have sex at her apartment, which is located near the school.

Sheriff James Metts says some of the teens involved were as young as 14 years old.

“It’s possible that hundreds of kids were involved,” Metts says.

Officers say in addition to alcohol and drugs, Hartwell provided birth control pills. Metts says the pills were given without the consent of parents.

Deputies say the investigation began August 14 when a parent said her daughter had gotten drunk and had her first sexual experience at one of these parties.

Now, I’m certainly willing to say that parents cannot monitor their childrens activities 24/7. That kind of life would not be something that either party would desire. What I am saying is that parents need to be a little more involved in where their children are, what they are doing, and whom they are doing it with. We no longer can trust teachers and other children’s parents (unfortunately) to provide a safe environment for our kids.

And it’s a problem that we have created ourselves. With the incidence of two parents working making it so that teens have more and more time that they are not under parental supervision in conjuction with the fact that they are being taught things that are powerful (sex, drugs, etc) in school when they’re not ready to handle it we’re playing with fire and bound to get burnt.

  1. This is precisely the reason that my kids may never experience sleep overs at anothers house, or parties, or visiting… If you want to hang with your buddies, bring them over here to our house. I will try to have the “cool” gear so that people WANT to hang here, with cookies and homemade breads and sodas or something… I really plan on influencing my kids and their friends! LOL….

my husband and I joke about chastitiy belts for my four month old daughter…. so far no one makes one! (its a joke, really)

  2. You have to really know the parents well, I think, to trust them with your children. Some kids will report what happened at a given party, and that’s a positive thing as well.

  3. I would’nt let my kids near her with a ten foot pole…oh yeah, that’s right I don’t have any kids. *feels left out* lol

  4. My kids have never done the slumber party thing away from home. My mom’s rule was if your friend has an older brother, forget it. I think it’s a pretty good rule.
Plus, most people treat the tv like it’s artwork on the wall. They leave it on constantly and no matter how vile or murderous the show is they have no qualms about their children seeing it. My 8 yo would have nightmares for weeks if she was exposed to some of the crime tv shows out there!

  5. That sounds like a good rule. I was talking with a friend at work and we were talking about how much harder it is to be a parent now that it used to be. I mean, I don’t know if it’s the fact that we know more about what’s going on in the world, or whether the world is a more dangerous place than when our parents grew up, but it definitely has changed.

  6. I think we’re more aware now of the dangers out there. For instance, my little girl’s friend may not have any older brothers, but is her dad decent? Yikes.
The BTK killer was active in his church, and his friends and family were stunned at his arrest.
I think what you’re doing here in exposing the culture’s effect on families is crucial. I can easily see Feminism as hugely responsible for the downfall of marriage/family and decency. We’ve come a long way since the 50’s.

  7. Do you bake in a dress, pearls and high heels? That was the standard back with Leave it to Beaver! I think you’re right, though. We’re much more aware of what’s going on now and therefore that makes us much more cautious!

  8. Lol, I LOVE aprons! Gets me in the “spirit” every time…
I always think of the 50’s as the last decent decade…when the daddies were still the majority in the workforce and most all moms stayed at home. Divorce was still on the scandalous side. Schools still allowed prayer and God within their walls.
If I had to wear high heels while baking to get it back, I just might! Is that where the feminist movement started?
Oh, and one bad thing about the 50’s…twin beds in the master bedroom! That’s scandalous!

  9. I don’t know if I could go back to twin beds in the bedroom! I thought it was something they did on Dick Van Dyke because of TV– since it was also taboo to wear capri pants. Then someone told me that that is exactly what happened!

I don’t think we’re headed back that way even if you wore high heels, though.
