Muppet Creators Go Adult

Muppets - Reuters PhotoThis isn’t your parent’s muppets, that’s for sure.

The creators of The Muppets and Sesame Street are staging a rude and lewd puppet show that is strictly for adults only.

Even Miss Piggy would blush over the antics of “Jim Henson’s Puppet Improv” that is spearheading a renaissance of puppet shows for grown-ups.

At this year’s Edinburgh Fringe arts festival, there are more puppet shows listed for adults than for children.

“That really pleases me,” said the late Jim Henson’s son Brian, director of the Muppet Christmas and Treasure Island movies now revelling in the freedom of performing for adults only.

My children really love Sesame Street– in fact I often get told the number of the day when I get home. (Though I think they believe that the name for Count is “Number of the Day” and sometimes the “Number of the Day” is E.) But it is disconcerting to believe that the head of the Muppets is really pleased by adult performances. That he justifies it by saying that his father would approve even is sicker.

Sin and association taints everything, and it’s hard for anything or anyone to remain pure and untainted. So it does not suprise me that the Muppets are pulled into it too. I mean, look at all of the people that we’re supposed to have looked up to for purity:

  • Julia Roberts: Maria Von Trapp, Mary Poppins– goes and does an R movie with a topless portion.
  • Britney Spears: Supposed to be sweet innocent and the picture of purity– kisses Madonna, is intimate with a boyfriend, has a quickie wedding… the list goes on and on.
  • Jessica Simpson: Claims Christ, stays pure until marriage– gets a divorce, appears on the covers of magazines with next to nothing on…
  • The list goes on and on.

You see, people in show business know two things make money:

  1. Family movies with moral values.
  2. Adult films and things that show skin

So in this case, the Muppets are trying to have both– just like so many other celebrities and others. The appeal of the dollar and the fact that the head of a studio believe more money can be made by appealing to the flesh drives even those things that seem wholesome to try to exploit sin to make a buck while trying to walk the tightrope of not offending children.

What should we do about it?
