Gay Marriage

If you ever wondered what would happen should the topic of same sex marriage come up to the Supreme court, I don’t think you have to wonder about it any more. It seems that when it comes to the hard questions, the Supremes are sometimes more than willing to let whatever may happen lower happen. It’s enough to make you wonder if even a Constitutional Amendment could make a difference.

What Has Happened to Teenage Girls?

May 30th, 2006 Viewed 2066 times

What’s happening to our teenage girls? Is it the fact that they are being told that it’s ok to be like the stereotypical guy?

Teenage girls are now more likely than boys to drink, smoke, steal and take drugs, a survey has shown.

In a disturbing confirmation of the spread of the ‘ladette’ culture, it found violence, aggression and self-destructive behaviour has spread alarmingly among girls over the past 20 years.

While boys appear less likely to be drawn towards crime or drugs than they were, psychological and social problems are stacking up among teenage girls, who are now expected to compete on equal terms with boys for educational opportunity and jobs.

Victors, Not Victims

May 29th, 2006 Viewed 1149 times

I can’t say it better myself, so here it is:

Here’s a Memorial Day quiz:

1. Who is Jessica Lynch?

Correct. She’s the Army private captured, and later rescued, in the early days of the war.

Leigh Ann Hester

2. Who is Leigh Ann Hester?

Come on. The Kentucky National Guard vehicle commander was awarded a Silver Star last year for fighting off an insurgent attack on a convoy in Iraq. The first woman to receive a Silver Star since World War II, and the first woman ever to receive one for close combat.

Abortion – Now it’s Something Holy?

Jill StanekJill Stanek’s article this week reveals where the lunatic fringe of the abortion industry is going with it’s thought. For them abortion isn’t just a “right”, it’s sacred. This is opposed to most people who at least pay lipservice to say that abortion should be “safe, legal and rare” but then complain that it’s getting too rare that women don’t have access to it.

You have to read what the woman pictured below has said to believe it. (You can hmm “Imagine” if you want…)

Who You Become is More Important Than What You Do

May 26th, 2006 Viewed 1324 times

This reminder comes to us from Rebecca Haglin:

In the “business” of life, it’s sometimes easy to forget that, as author Dr. vs. Gilbert Beers says, “What our children become is infinitely more important than what our children will do.”

In other words, it’s who they are becoming on the inside that matters most.

In the hubbub of living in the fast lane that is modern America, I must remind myself that the greatest gift I can impart to my children is to teach them to love God with all of their hearts and minds, and to love their neighbors as they love themselves.

How true this is. God calls us to make an impact, to impart a passion for Him in people. He blesses us with children as the closest neighbors to make disciples. As my church’s Sunday School class has been focusing on teens– it’s more important who they become! We can give them all the activities and entertainment and physical things, but in the end, it is who they are, not what they have.

A big key to this is who the parents are, and what kind of example they are. What parents focus on and what they do with their time will have a big impact on who the children are. So, watch what you watch on TV. Take time to talk with your children. Realize that the time you have to make your impact is short. Get to your church as often as the doors are open!

Human Trafficking in the U.S.A.

May 21st, 2006 Viewed 2001 times

As the debate swirls around immigration, illegal immigration, and what to do about it– here’s another wrinkle to toss into the conversation:

Federal agents rounded up 66 people Monday in a series of raids described by officials as smashing a ring that smuggled Mexicans into the United States and may have forced women to work as prostitutes.

Officers with the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided 15 locations in New Jersey and New York early Monday after New Jersey State Police pulled over two vehicles containing at least 10 women who had been working in brothels in Maryland, Virginia and Washington, said Kyle Hutchins, special agent in charge of the bureau’s Newark office.

None of the alleged prostitution took place in New Jersey, authorities said. Rather, when their weekly or monthly shifts in Washington-area brothels were finished, the women would be driven to northern New Jersey and New York, Hutchins said.

Thirty-six women and 30 men were taken into custody, Hutchins said. Two were charged with illegal money transfer and the rest were being held on immigration charges alleging they were in this country illegally, he said.

It was at least the third major immigrant smuggling ring believed to be operating in New Jersey in recent years.

Authorities said prosecutions involving Russian strippers who were forced to work in go-go bars and young Honduran women forced to work as hostesses are ongoing in federal court.

Hutchins said authorities were trying to determine whether the latest suspected ring was connected to either of the previous cases.

So, because they are illegal, and we have porous borders, people can bring human beings in this country and treat them like cattle. If protecing us from terrorists or a Mexican reclamation of the southwest weren’t big enough reasons to lock down the border, surely human trafficking is!

Baptists Should Support Public Schools?

May 20th, 2006 Viewed 1823 times

Vox Day quotes this letter from the Baptist Center for Ethics:

Baptist Center for Ethics
Nashville, TN
April 21, 2006Dear Fellow Baptists:

The time has come for Baptists to speak positively about public education and to take proactive initiatives that advance a constructive future for America’s public school system.

We recognize the need for reforms in public schools, as all organizations need reformation, including churches and corporations. Reforms to improve all facets of public education should be a constant goal of our nation.

While every family is free to decide the course of their children’s education, we believe it is wrong for Baptist leaders to urge Baptists to exit the nation’s public school system for homeschools and Christian academies and to equip that cause.

We decry the anti-public school statements that identify public schools as “the enemies of God,” that label the nation’s school system as “a dark and decaying government school system” and that claim public schools are converting Christian children “to an anti-Christian worldview.” We urge a halt to the demonization of public schools.

We believe Baptists should recommit themselves to public education, not as a means toward converting school children, but because it is the right thing to do.

We believe public school children are God’s children who deserve the nurture of a good society, the prospect for a good education and the equal opportunity for a good life.

We call on Baptists to recommit themselves to the separation of church and state, which will keep public schools free from coercive pressure to promote sectarian faith, such as state-written school prayers and the teaching of neo-creationism (intelligent design).

We call on Baptists to recommit themselves to a just society. A just society will ensure that every American child has an opportunity for a good education and that public schools have the resources necessary to provide such an opportunity, achieving the highest standards possible.

We call on Baptists to recommit themselves to the nation’s founding principle of
“E Pluribus Unum.” A society based on unity out of diversity will embrace every child and recognize the vital role public schools play in achieving national unity.
We, the undersigned, pledge therefore to pray for public schools;

show our support for public schools through worship services that affirm all school-related personnel;

advocate for a high wall of separation between church and state that is critical to good public education;

pursue a just society that benefits every child;

speak up for the role public education plays in democracy, especially the unity it creates in the midst of diversity so necessary in our society;

challenge religious voices who demonize public education; and share this letter with others.

Now, you know I’m on the homeschooling bandwagon. This is just ridiculous– all eduction has some coloring and what’s better, a humanistic coloring or (in this case) a Baptist coloring to Baptists.

Coming to a Neighborhood Near You

May 19th, 2006 Viewed 1408 times

This past Easter, something different was happening on a quiet street in California.

Two weeks ago today, inside the million-dollar-plus houses on a quiet
cul-de-sac in Encino, the neighborhood kids delighted in what the
Easter Bunny had brought.Then, about 10 a.m., the porn stars started showing up.

Helaine Gesas, who has lived on Hayvenhurst Avenue for 38 years, was in
her kitchen cooking Passover supper when she noticed men hauling
cameras and lights into the two-story house across the street.

Her neighbor Kerry Cohen, a paralegal and mother, was on her way out to
organize a charity event. As she squeezed past several large production
trucks, Cohen looked in her rear-view mirror and saw “scantily clad”
young women parking their cars and heading toward the same house.

As far as John R. Johnson was concerned, “that was the end of Easter
Sunday.” Johnson, another neighbor, told his 9-year-old daughter to
stay inside while what he described as a “prison-yard break” — a large
film crew, many of its members covered in tattoos — entered the iron
gates of the house in the 3600 block of Hayvenhurst.

Outraged, Johnson called the city seeking to shut the porn shoot down. But everything, he was told, was perfectly legal.

In any given year, about 3,900 adult films are shot in Los Angeles,
according to industry estimates. As with any other shoot, those films
are supposed to obtain permits from the city. But the city doesn’t
restrict the content of the projects it approves.

Which means that if one of your neighbors decides, as Johnson’s did, to
rent out his house for the filming of “The Alphabet” — in which sexual
acts are performed in alphabetical order by 21-year-old identical twins
— there’s not much you can do to stop him.

At first they thought that it was just a normal photo shoot, with which one might not have a problem. Once they found out the kind of shoot, and that multiple “companies” were planning to use this building, they were furious.

This is one of the side effects of our culture that accepts porn as free speech. I was just reading back to January 2005 while copying some posts over where I had some discussion with Wendy about decriminalization of prostitution, and this is yet another argument about why it should never happen. The unitended consequences…

Let’s say that prostition was decriminalized. What’s to stop the two family house next door from becoming a brothel for a weekend– rented out by neighbors on vacation?

I was reading last night a commentary on Psalm 2 and it said that the leaders of the vain Earth are going to try to remove more and more of God from this Earth, but God is going to laugh at their attempts to keep Him out. He will win– as He states: In His perspective, it’s already done.
