Be Careful What You Say

We all know that words have amazing power. They have the power to build up and to tear down. They have the ability to convey complex ideas, and things can be miscommunicated. So goes the following story:

CANBERRA (Reuters) – The pilot of a small plane in Australia sparked an emergency terrorism alert after accidentally using the radio code word for hijack, authorities said on Tuesday.

The pilot of the twin-prop aircraft inadvertently used the secret code word while talking by radio with air traffic controllers soon after he took off from the eastern city of Brisbane bound for Melbourne with one passenger on Friday.

The National Office of Transport Security 24-hour operations room swung into action. The plane, which did not deviate from its flight path or change altitude, was monitored for a couple of hours until authorities were satisfied it had not been hijacked.
